The Elmonica name dates back to 1908 when the Oregon Electric Railroad was being built through the area. A right-of-way was needed through the property of Sam Stoy, a Portland insurance agent. Mr. Stoy told the rail company that he would allow the right-of-way if they would name the station (built on his land) for his two daughters, Eleanor and Monica. Thus, the name Elmonica was created. Shortly thereafter, a nearby mercantile store used the name Elmonica. The store was owned and operated for many years by the Schlottman family. The station and the store, now removed, were located within yards of the existing rail crossing on Baseline Road. Today, a small green sign on Baseline Road with the name Elmonica on it, marks what once was a small town. Elmonica School was opened in the fall of 1981. In 1991 Elmonica School celebrated its tenth birthday with an assembly and reception which included members of the Schlottman family as some of the distinguished guests. The tenth birthday was also marked with the creation of a time capsule to which every classroom made a contribution. The capsule is in the glass display case in our front hall. The building has changed over the years. In 1988 a six-classroom addition with a large common area and restrooms was added using the modular construction popular at that time. In 1992 another four classroom section was added; and a single room was added in 1997. Over the years, we have had portable classrooms at times to accommodate our enrollment growth.
